Jyotish may have lost the cosmic hamsa symbol to Middle Eastern superstition, but its heavenly roots can still be found in an astrological layout called the Hand of Heaven. The palm and thumb as well as the fingers are partitioned. All together there are twenty-four partitions or mounds, and each mound has a celestial counterpart. The celestial counterpart is represented by an astrological symbol, and they are the astrological cues from which the influences of each mound are determined.

The hand of heaven introduces the concept of mounds. Mounds are segments of the hand, and they are one way of connecting Astrology to the Ang Vidya. As we will see later, this connection becomes an important part of maximizing its potential for self-awareness.

The other factors to consider when interpreting the mounds are its colouring, texture and tone. Colours of the skin are paralanguage cues that complement the interpretation of mounds by refining the assumptions made in drawing conclusions. A mound may be different in tone or texture too.  Texture is the coarseness of the skin, and the tone of a mound is its vibrational luminosity and it is defined as a general healthy appearance.
